De ‘Slachthuissite’ ligt aan het Brusselse kanaal van Vilvoorde. Anderlecht, Kuregem, tussen het West- en Zuidstation. Op dit gebied wordt de toekomst van Brussel gebouwd, maar niet zonder terug te kijken naar de geschiedenis van de site. Het slachthuis, de plaats van slachting van dieren, wordt het voedselknooppunt van Brussel. Een plek waar duizenden mensen elke dag bij elkaar komen, op het kruispunt van wegen, water, metro. Een ontmoetingsplaats, met verschillende behoeften, verschillende redenen, verschillende vragen.
Nadat we het masterplan hebben overgenomen, na het maken van nieuwe masterplannen, verleggen we nu de focus. Het is nog steeds hetzelfde, maar nu richten we ons op de randen van de site. Niet op het centrum, maar op de verbinding van het gebied met de context, in vier zeer verschillende grenzen: Bergensesteenweg met metro en het Clemenceau-plein, Ropsy-Chaudron met zijn parvis en zijn hal en de Heyvaertwijk, het kanaal met zijn grachtenplan, en Erasmus als ‘goede’ buur. Er zijn een aantal vaste elementen in Plan Abattoir: het slachthuis, de markt, het eten, ... Maar hoe wordt dit gebied eigenlijk ontwikkeld? Niet vanuit het midden, maar vanuit de randen. Wat hebben die randen nodig, naast het verhaal van het slachthuis, de markt, het eten,... ? Hoe kan dit gebied een transitie maken tussen de bestaande elementen (sociale economie) en de nieuwe elementen (middenklasse, gentrificatie, ...) Dit is een integraal duurzaam verhaal, onderdeel van een groter verhaal van ecologische netwerken, van stadslandbouw, van warmtenetten, van waterrecuperatie, alternatieve energiesystemen, ... Maar bovenal en dit voor de eerste keer, een verhaal over de openbare ruimte. Publieke ruimte als een overgang, als basis voor beweging en recreatie.
The ‘Slachthuissite’ is located along the Brussels Vilvoorde Canal. Anderlecht, Kuregem, inbetween the West and South Station. In this area, the future of Brussels is being built. But not without looking back to the history of the site. Abattoir, place of slaughter of animals, becomes the food hub of Brussels. A place where thousands of people come together every day, at the intersection of roads, water, subway. A place of meeting, with different needs, different reasons, different questions.
After taking over the master plan, after making new master plans, we are now shifting the focus. It is still the same, but now we focus on the edges of the site. Not about the center, but about the connection of the area with the context, in four very different borders: Bergensesteenweg with metro and square Clemenceau, Ropsy-Chaudron with its parvis and its hall and its Heyvaert district, Canal with its Canal plan, and Erasmus as ‘good’ neighbor. There are a number of fixed elements in Plan Abattoir: the slaughterhouse, the market, the food, ... But how is this area actually being developed? Not from the center, but from the edges. What do those edges need, in addition to the story of the slaughterhouse, the market, the food. How can this area make a transition between the existing elements (social economy) and the new elements (middle class, gentrification, ...) This is an integral sustainable story, part of a larger story of ecological networks, of urban farming, of heat networks, of water recuperation, alternative energy systems, ... But above all, and this for the first time, a story of public space. Public space as a transition, as a basis for movement and recreation.
